Floods, Fires and Power Cuts

A cyberattack is not the likeliest thing to close a Malaysian business. Water, fire and a power trip are, and all three strike the same single room.

The rain is already on the calendar. MetMalaysia expects the northeast monsoon to run from early November into the end of March, driven this year by a weak La Nina, with five to seven spells of continuous heavy rain, more than the usual five, and the worst of it in December across Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, Sarawak and Sabah. Floods are the headline, but they are only one of three very ordinary ways a Malaysian business loses a day, or a lot more. The other two are just as close to home: fire, where Bomba attributes around sixty percent of fires to electrical faults and short circuits, now at a three year high, and the plain power trip or surge that quietly kills a server. None of these is exotic. All three happen every year, to real businesses, down the road.

Here is the part worth sitting with. None of these three disasters destroys “the internet,” and none of them needs a hacker. What they destroy is a place: the one room where your server, your router and, very often, the only copy of your data all sit together. For most small businesses that room is the back office, a cupboard under the stairs, or a corner of the shop floor. It was never built to survive water, fire or a power surge, and it holds everything. That is the definition of a single point of failure, and most owners are standing on one without knowing it.

Think about how each of the three actually plays out. The access road floods and the premises are cut off, or water reaches the equipment and it is finished. An electrical fault starts in the wall overnight and the hardware, and the business records on it, are gone by morning. A power surge during a storm corrupts the server mid write, and the backup sitting on the shelf beside it is corrupted too. In every case the loss is not really the machine, which can be replaced in a week. It is the data and the ability to operate, which often cannot.

The fix is not to flood proof your shop or rewire the whole building, useful as those are. It is to accept a simpler truth: the systems your business cannot live without should not live in a room you would not trust in a storm. Move them somewhere built, from the ground up, to survive all three threats at once, and a bad day at your address stops being a bad day for your business.

That is exactly what a proper data centre is for, and it is the quiet logic behind BigBand’s. The Tier III facility sits on high, flood free ground in Cyberjaya, with fire detection and suppression designed for a server hall, and uninterruptible power with backup generators so a trip or a surge never reaches your systems. Keep your critical systems and a clean copy of your data there, and the flood, the fire and the power cut can take the building without taking the business. Twenty years of running exactly this, locally, is what stands behind that.

“The flood does not destroy the internet. It destroys the one room where your server and your only backup happen to sit together.”

Three questions before the monsoon arrives

  • Water: if the access road or the ground floor flooded, what happens to the room your systems are in, and to the data inside it?
  • Fire: if an electrical fault hit your premises overnight, is there a copy of your business somewhere the fire could not reach?
  • Power: when the power trips or surges in a storm, does your business simply pause, or does something get corrupted and lost?

If any answer involves losing data or losing days, the single room is the problem, and it is a problem you can solve before November rather than during it.

YOUR NEXT STEP

Walk to the room where your server and data physically sit. Ask one honest question: would you trust this room in a flood, a fire and a power surge? If the answer is no to any of the three, that room is your risk, and the monsoon is a deadline.
