The Splintering Internet Reaches Malaysia<\/span><\/b><em><\/em><\/h1>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On 14 July 2026, Nvidia tightened who it will sell its most advanced chips to across Asia. Reports say a new compliance whitelist disqualified more than half of its previous buyers, with extra end-user scrutiny in Singapore, Malaysia and Japan, meant to stop chips being rerouted into China. Days later, its chief executive toured Japan promoting sovereign AI, the market it can still freely serve.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Behind that single week sits a much larger shift. The open, borderless internet that businesses grew up with is fragmenting along national lines. Where your data physically lives, and whose laws can reach it, has quietly become one of the most important decisions a business makes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/span>\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><b><span>WHAT THE RESEARCH SHOWS<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Gartner forecasts worldwide sovereign cloud spending will reach 80 billion US dollars in 2026, <\/strong>a jump of nearly 36 percent in a single year, with China the largest single market and Asia Pacific among the fastest growing.<\/li>\n<li>Workloads are moving home. Gartner expects a wave of geopatriation to shift around 20 percent of existing workloads off global providers and onto local ones.<\/li>\n<li>For the first time, the 2026 US national trade report treats data localisation and sovereign cloud as trade barriers, part of a two-part strategy: the CLOUD Act to reach data wherever it sits, and trade pressure on countries that try to keep data beyond that reach.<\/li>\n<li>Europe has responded in kind, with new rules that would bar US hyperscalers from the most sensitive public contracts, aimed squarely at that same legal reach.<\/li>\n<li>Closer to home, Malaysia&#8217;s amended data protection law now allows personal data to leave the country only to places with comparable protection, and financial and health regulators lean toward keeping data onshore.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><strong><em>\u201c<\/em><\/strong><b><i><span>Keep wealth generation within their own borders to strengthen the local economy.<\/span><\/i><\/b><strong><em><\/em><\/strong><strong><em>\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<div>\n<div><span>Rene Buest, Senior Director Analyst, Gartner<\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<h2>\u00a0<\/h2>\n<h2><b><span>Why This Matters for Malaysian Businesses<\/span><\/b><\/h2>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For any business trading across China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia, this creates a genuine puzzle. Different jurisdictions now pull in different directions, and the same data can be subject to more than one country&#8217;s claims at once. Chip and compute controls have started to reach cloud services too, which means the region or provider you rely on today could become off limits, sometimes with little warning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a subtler trap as well. <strong>Data residency is not the same as data sovereignty. <\/strong>Data sitting in a Malaysian data center is not truly under local control if the platform&#8217;s owner, the support staff who can reach it, or the people who hold the encryption keys all sit under another country&#8217;s law.
