A single Amazon data centre in Virginia hit a technical fault, and with it went Snapchat, Fortnite, Venmo, Delta’s check-in, and more than a thousand other companies.Seventeen million problem reports poured in from around the world. Analysts later put the global cost in the hundreds of millions of dollars, most of it not Amazon’s, but borne by all the businesses that ran on top of it and could do nothing but wait. It was an expensive way to be reminded of something simple: when the systems stop, the money does not stop leaving.

Now, the eye-watering figures you read after an outage, five thousand dollars a minute, a million an hour, are real, but they describe giant enterprises. They are not your number, and quoting them at a small business helps no one. Here is the honest version. For a typical SME, an hour of downtime costs somewhere between a few hundred and a few thousand ringgit, and the maths is not complicated. Take the staff sitting idle, still on full pay, and add the sales you would normally have made in that hour. That is your cost of being offline. It is not abstract. It is your Tuesday.

So run it for your own shop or factory. Say ten people are standing around because the system is down, at roughly RM25 an hour each. That is RM250 an hour in wages you are paying for nothing. Add the RM1,000 of orders you would normally have taken in that hour, and you are already losing north of RM1,200 every hour, before you count the customer who could not check out, gave up, and bought from someone else. That last one is the quiet killer. When the system comes back, those sales are usually not delayed, they are simply gone, and so, sometimes, is the customer. One 2026 study found that in nearly half of all outages, customers noticed the problem before the company did.

Here is the part worth holding on to, because it is genuinely good news. Your cost per hour is mostly fixed by your size, but your total bill is decided by one thing you can actually control: how fast you recover. The very same outage that costs one business RM1,200 costs another RM24,000, and the only difference is that the first was back in an hour while the second took a full day. Cut your recovery from a day to an hour, and you have cut the bill by ninety percent, without changing anything about your business except how well prepared it was.

That preparation is exactly what a proper data centre is for. BigBand’s facility in Cyberjaya is built so the systems do not go down in the first place: power that keeps running when the grid does not, cooling that never stops, and connections with real uptime commitments behind them. And when something does go wrong on your side, a tested backup kept safely offsite means you are back in minutes, not days. The whole point is to keep your hours of downtime as close to zero as possible.

“When the system comes back, the lost sales do not.
