What One Day of Downtime Actually Costs<\/span><\/b><\/h1>\n

Downtime never shows up on an invoice. That is exactly why it is so easy to underpay for prevention, and so expensive to ignore<\/span><\/i><\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/i><\/h2>\n<\/div>\n

On 19 July 2024, a single faulty software update crashed 8.5 million Windows computers around the world in what became known as the CrowdStrike outage. It was not a hack. One update, pushed automatically, grounded airlines, froze hospitals and stopped tills. The insurer Parametrix later estimated the direct loss to Fortune 500 companies alone at 5.4 billion US dollars, an average of about 44 million per affected company. Delta Air Lines put its own bill at around 500 million after thousands of cancelled flights. And here is the part that should catch every owner\u2019s eye: cyber insurance covered only 10 to 20 percent of it. The rest came straight out of the businesses.<\/p>\n

You are not Delta. But the shape of the maths is identical, and a smaller business has far less cushion to absorb it. The cost of downtime comes in four parts, and none of them appears on a bill: the revenue you never earn while you are down, the wages you still pay staff who are sitting idle, the recovery cost of overtime and callouts to put things right, and the slow one, the trust of a customer who tried, could not reach you, and quietly went elsewhere. Worth knowing too: research by Splunk and Oxford Economics finds only about a third of downtime is caused by a cyberattack. The rest is hardware, human error, power and weather. It is an everyday risk, not a rare one.<\/p>\n

So what is the number for a business your size? International research puts a typical small business at roughly 1,000 to 5,000 US dollars for every hour offline, and ITIC finds that firms of twenty to a hundred staff often lose between 8,000 and 25,000 an hour once everything is counted. Yet ITIC also finds that six in ten businesses cannot say what a single hour of downtime costs them. That is the real problem: if you cannot price the risk, you cannot judge what it is worth spending to avoid it.<\/p>\n

Put it in local terms. Picture a business with fifteen people sitting idle and about RM1,500 of sales it would normally make in an hour. The idle wages alone are around RM375 an hour, and with the lost sales the meter is running at roughly RM1,875 every hour, close to RM15,000 across a single working day, before you add the overtime to catch up, and before you lose a single customer. Now imagine that day falls during a festive peak or the month-end rush. The figure is uncomfortable precisely because it is realistic.<\/p>\n

The good news is that the number you can most control is not the disaster itself, it is how long it lasts. That is why where your systems run matters.
