The single most important road you have is the one between your office and it, and for almost everyone that road is the open public internet.

Stop and count what already lives in the cloud. Your email and files on Microsoft 365, your accounting, the system that runs your orders or your point of sale, perhaps your whole e-commerce store. For most businesses today, the cloud is not a side tool. It is where the work happens. Which means the most important connection you own is no longer inside your office at all. It is the road between your office and the cloud, and almost every business is driving that road on the ordinary public internet: shared, best-effort, and crossing a dozen networks you neither see nor control.

This is why the cloud so often feels slow or unreachable when the cloud itself is perfectly healthy. The problem is rarely the giant, well-run data centre at the far end. It is the journey there. Traffic from your office hops across network after network on the open internet, and any one of them can congest, misroute or slow at the wrong moment. The destination is fine. The road is the weak link. On the worst days even the giants wobble, as the long AWS disruption in October 2025 reminded everyone, but the everyday version of this, the one that actually costs you hours, is the messy public path between you and a cloud that is working just fine.

Here is a quick way to tell the two apart. If Teams or your cloud system crawls on the office connection but works on your phone’s mobile data, that is the road, not the cloud. If the provider’s status page is all green while your staff still stare at spinning wheels, that is the road too. You are not waiting on the cloud. You are waiting on the trip to it.

The most telling proof comes from the cloud giants themselves. Amazon, Microsoft and Google all sell a private, direct connection into their clouds, precisely because the public route is the weak point. Microsoft is blunt about why, in its own words: because these connections do not go over the public internet, they offer “more reliability, faster speeds, consistent latencies, and higher security than typical connections over the internet.” They built a private road because they know what the public one is worth under load.

You do not need to be an enterprise to use the same idea. That private road is Direct Cloud Connect: a dedicated link from your systems straight to your cloud provider, skipping the open internet altogether. Speed stays consistent, latency stays low and steady, and because your traffic never touches the public internet, it is more secure by default. Where you connect from matters too, which is the quiet advantage of BigBand’s home in Cyberjaya, close to Kuala Lumpur and the major exchange points. Put your systems in the Tier III facility there and run a private path to your cloud, and the trip stops being the thing that lets you down.

“The cloud giants sell a private road into their own clouds.
