It is a short list you run every quarter, before the bad day arrives.<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<h2>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/h2>\n<div>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here is the gap that closes businesses. In a 2026 survey, 94 percent of small business owners said they were confident they could recover from a disaster, yet only 31 percent actually had a plan. That space between \u201cwe would be fine\u201d and \u201cwe are ready\u201d is exactly where a flood, a fire, a ransomware note or a dead server does its damage. And a plan written once and filed away is barely better than none, because your business changes every few months and the plan does not. The fix is to treat continuity as a habit, a short checklist you run every quarter. With the monsoon season now upon us, this is the quarter to run it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The checklist below is built around three plain outcomes: stay running, stay protected, stay connected. Work through it honestly and mark anything that is a \u201cno\u201d or a \u201cnot sure.\u201d You are not trying to fix everything today. You are trying to find your weakest point before it finds you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Stay Running: your business continuity core<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Do you know your three most critical systems? <br \/><\/strong>The ones the business genuinely cannot operate without for a day.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Have you written down two numbers? <br \/><\/strong>How long you can be down (your RTO) and how much data you can afford to lose (your RPO).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Is there a one-page plan, and does the team know it? <br \/><\/strong>Who does what in the first hour, and the phone numbers to reach them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Would the room your systems sit in survive a bad day? <br \/><\/strong>A flood, a fire or a power surge at that one address.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Stay Protected: your data and backups<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Do you pass the 3-2-1 test? <br \/><\/strong>Three copies, on two kinds of storage, with one kept offsite.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Is one copy beyond ransomware\u2019s reach? <br \/><\/strong>Offline or immutable, so an attacker inside your network cannot touch it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>When did you last test a restore? <br \/><\/strong>Not just check the backup ran, but actually bring data back and confirm it worked.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Stay Connected: your connectivity<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Is there a second internet line? <br \/><\/strong>And does it take over automatically, in seconds, when the first one drops.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Is the second line truly independent? <br \/><\/strong>A different carrier on a different path, not two lines in the same duct.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Does your cloud have a reliable path? <br \/><\/strong>For the systems you depend on most, a steady connection rather than the open public internet alone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Run those ten questions and a pattern appears fast. Most owners can answer the first few in each group and stall on the rest, and the stalls are the plan. You do not need to close every gap at once. Close the most exposed one this quarter, the next one the quarter after, and you are doing something that 69 percent of businesses are not: actually preparing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One practical shortcut is worth naming, because it closes several lines at once.
